maldon  > Food > Our growing dome
Here it is -- the first "Growing Spaces" dome in the southern hemisphere! WE live on six acres just 20 mionutes north of Christchurch, New Zealand, and we have been increasingly alarmed at what's in our food. We decided we weren't going to dance to that tune any more. So I did the homework and, for me, the dome is the best. So after lots of talk and emails, here it is. This site will tell the story of its growth and its part in our lives. At the time of writing, April '08, there's still a lot to be done, like the water tank and we don't have the floor finished yet. But it's extraordinary. I am watching climbing beans grow up the wall four inches a day. Amazing.

maldon > Things are progessing nicely. The panels around the doors have yet to be fixed, but we're on schedule.
maldon > Late on their last night, Udgar proudly handed us the keys to our new dome. That's my little vegetarian, Karen, between we two ugly ones. For friends: My boots are called "gummies" (for gumboots) in NZ. In Oz of course, they're "Wellies" for "Wellington boots".
maldon > Wot, me worry. Carl inside the partly constructed tank. He was the comedian on the team, but worked hard and he thinks.
maldon > Carl again, inside the tank, smoothing the liner. Udgar and Puja had left by tthis time, back to Colorado.
maldon > We decided we'd put in a concrete path to the front door. The boys had started constructing the gardens around the outside. In winter, it gets a bit below freezing and there's the occasional snow, but we thought we'd plant some things that repelled bad insects and attracted goodies. Will let you know how it works.
maldon > The finished path. Pretty neat, huh? We also reorganised the three solar panels. Fitting had been a bit "string and chewing gum". Looks better now. And I also got them to pack up the panels maybe two inches, so that pine needles would slip through and not pack up on the top side.
maldon > Carl preparing the perimeter gardens.
maldon > Getting water to the dome from the 50mm (two inches, to you) waterline that comes from our own bore. The water is very special. We have it tested and it's pure, pure, pure.
maldon > Joining the pipes that go under the wall. What happens inside the dome is in later photographs.
