This feller had a roadside business that wasn't doing too well, so I gave him some advice. Have a shave, I said, get some decent clothes, talk to people. I am a mid-60s Australian, now living in the south island of New Zealand. I use Canon digital gear and my wife and I (that's her, with the tiger) wander the world taking photos. RAW only. I want to take my photos to the place where photography and art meet. Have just retired and discovered Portfolio and SmugMug. More galleries to come over the next year.

Our growing dome : Here it is -- the first "Growing Spaces" dome in the southern hemisphere! WE live on six acres just 20 mionutes north of Christchurch, New Zealand, and we have been increasingly alarmed at what's in our food. We decided we weren't going to dance to that tune any more. So I did the homework and, for me, the dome is the best. So after lots of talk and emails, here it is. This site will tell the story of its growth and its part in our lives. At the time of writing, April '08, there's still a lot to be done, like the water tank and we don't have the floor finished yet. But it's extraordinary. I am watching climbing beans grow up the wall four inches a day. Amazing.

Milford Track : Karen and her mother, Monika, decided they'd walk New Zealand's Milford Track, one of the great walks of the world. They went into training three months before, walking and exercising, so they'd be fit for the trip. There are two ways to do it, one called the freedom walk, which is for hardy souls who don't mind carrying all their food, sleeping in huts where the water might be cold because rain has stopped the solar heating. Not our two, though. Accompanied, was the way they went -- guides, warm huts, great meals every day and even wine to greet you. Bedding, towels, all supplied. They carried clothing and personal items only.Very civilised.
They had a great time.
For more information on the actual Milford Track see the sites on the internet.

Wilderness - Polar Bears of Seal River : Seal River is on the western side of Hudson Bay, Manitoba, Canada. It is the place for polar bears in the summertime, and about a zillion beluga whales. Seal River Lodge takes only about a dozen people in a family environment. The hospitality and friendliess are memorable, the food is astonishing, and the experience is life-changing. If you love wilderness and you have good camera gear and you want a rare experience, go. Tell 'em I sent you. My pix are all RAW and then processed down to small JPGs for SmugMug. Hope they don't disappoint.

Geraldine was 150 - and we were there : Geraldine is a small town about an hour and a half below Christchurch, about half way down the east side of the south island of New Zealand. In May, 2007, they celebrated their 150th anniversary. WE decided we'd like to be there, so we booked in for four days at the end of the ten-day celebration. It was a delightful experience. Let me explain......

White's Road house : This is a first look our house at Ohoka, a semi-rural community about 20 minutes north of Christchurch. It's more than six acres in area (2.5 ha). There are 98 rose trees. I bought six new ones to take us through the hundred!

Brisbane House : This is our house.
Inside the foyer, stairs go down and up. The house is all poured concrete. Exterior is rockcote.
There's a two-street frontage, fruit trees, wine cellar, 20,000 litre water storage, fruit trees, lots of things. All air-conditioned. It's near the top of Teneriffe Hill so there are extensive river views and outto Moreton Bay. The house is very, very private, which is unusual since it's less than ten minutes to the heart of the city.
We don't live in Australia any more.

White's Road in the snow : It was Saturday afternoon, June 7, 2008. I'd been out taking photos in the morning, came home at lunch time, and the rain started, gently, mid-afternoon. Then the temperature dropped and things changed about an hour before dark. The rain and tiny hail turned into these little flakes. Then bigger flakes. This first picture was the beginning.
